Our Journey

Sailing Yacht Cari Our Journey

Between 2005 and 2015 worked in Africa, Israel, UK, Europe and the USA.
My record was that in 2009 I did 48 long haul return flights out of SA. I also through this process amassed more than 1 000 000 airmiles on multiple airlines. Some weekends I was just too tired to come home so my wife and daughters would visits me for a weekend in London, Spain or Kenya.

In 2010, after the World Cup, we spent a holiday in Palma de Mallorca. We hired a yacht and a skipper. I expected a mature gentleman as a skipper. When we got to Palma I got a 20 year old blonde German / Spanish boy in a Speedo that really liked my 15 year old daughter. After two days I wanted to through him into the deep blue sea.

When the family got back to SA they said they wanted to do it again the following year. I said only if we don’t need a skipper. Lyn and Meegan took on the challenge and promptly enrolled on their holidays and qualified as skippers. Meegan was 16 years old.
Meegan was 28 years old last week, but she has got w years experience as a skipper. After her law studies she worked on yachts and was part of permanent staff on a huge racing yacht called Perseus 3. https://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/perseus-3
They were 11 permanent crew and brought in 45 extra crew when the were racing this yacht! They were about to leave Palma for Auckland when Covid 19 brought everything to a halt and she resigned and managed to get back to SA. She also decided to continue sailing as a hobby but not professionally.

We bought our yacht last year and we hope to spend our SA winters in the Med. This is a huge test for Lyn and me. We have been away for a month now and we have not yet killed one another. 😂😂

If we can do this until the end of Sept we will most probably sell our house in Sandhurst and Semigrate to the Western Cape and spend winters up here. We firmly believe that “less is more” and real wealth is not owning an alarm clock.

We are moving west along the Turkish coast. We will spend all of our time to Turkey this year. Next year we will attempt Greece and then more west again. It is more complicated being in the EU from a tax perspective.

Turkey is an awesome place. It has a population of 85m people. It also Ha the second largest military in NATO.
Hierdie mense is paraat!!

The country is also secular. That means they welcome all religions. The net result is that the majority of the people are Muslims, but anything goes.
The Turkish Riveira is as beautiful as the French coast. It is however an affordable place. You can spend a week in a Turkish resort for much less that Mauritius and that includes the flights. Istanbul is also half in the EU and half in Asia. Plan your next holiday somewhere in Turkey.
